I Understand

I understand that many of you are hurting after the election. And I understand that many others are celebrating.

For those of you hurting, I understand that many of you feel afraid, I understand that you feel unheard, I understand that you don’t feel respected, I understand that you don’t feel safe. I’m sorry for your pain. And, as hard as it may be, I encourage you to handle these feelings with grace.

It’s difficult when we feel so hurt that we want to scream at the people we perceive to have caused the hurt. Yet the more we scream the distance between us continues to widen.

For those of you celebrating, I understand that many of you feel massive relief, I understand that you have hope again, I understand that you feel safe again, I understand that you feel heard again. I’m happy for you. And, as hard as it may be, I encourage you to celebrate with grace.

It can be difficult to win without flaunting, especially when we have felt so misunderstood for so long. Yet the more we flaunt and taunt the distance between us continues to widen.

I hope both sides remember that no matter who the president is or is not, all of us can still do everything we can to be the best humans we can be, on a daily basis. To be the best friend, partner, neighbor, sibling, parent, co-worker or even opponent we can be. We can still be someone we are proud of.

I hope both sides recognize that healing happens together, not apart.
