The Rhythm of the City

I’m typing this on my last day in Oaxaca, and by the time you read this, assuming everything went well, I should have just arrived home after 11 days on the road.

I’m feeling mixed about leaving Oaxaca. On one hand it has been really lovely getting to know this city and its people. I’m just now becoming familiar with where my favorite food stands, cafes, bars, restaurants and neighborhoods are located and am beginning to see the same locals head off to, or return from, work each day. It’s fun feeling the rhythm of the city.

At the same time, I’m really looking forward to getting back home. To nature, to calm, to Rosie, to family, to my own bed and to begin the final push in completing my van.

As you know, I typically focus on landscape and wildlife photography, but when I travel I inevitably end up photographing the local buildings and people. This trip was no different. The vast majority of the photos I took were in the city (although not all of them), and I was able to snap a handful of portraits as well. For the most part the locals were more than happy to let me photograph them, although I did get rejected a couple times (I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more, to be honest).

The day I landed in Oaxaca—the same day I took this photo—was the only day of rain I experienced the entire trip. The rain itself was very mild, but I was extremely grateful for the intense clouds that it provided as a backdrop. This photo benefited from that immensely.

Once I’m back home, settled and rested, you can expect more stories, photographs and insights from this trip. I had a great time exploring Oaxaca in real life, and I really hope you enjoy exploring it with me through my lens and keyboard in the weeks to come.

Stay tuned for more!
