A Feather
While I was back in Sonoma waiting out the Park Fire ordeal, I had plenty of time to reflect on these big changes I’m making in my life. And here’s the crazy thing that I’ve come to realize… by most standards the life I’m leaving behind is a dream come true: a high-paying job at a gorgeous winery, a downtown condo in a quiet little wine country town that’s full of fantastic wineries, restaurants, tasting rooms, bars and shops. People dream about this life. The problem is—I don’t. Don’t get me wrong, it’s been great, and I’m sure I’ll miss it plenty—for all I know I’ll miss it so much that I decide to move back someday. But it’s not a life that sets my soul on fire. I want to travel, I want to explore, I want to learn and grow through exposure to different cultures and perspectives. I want to drift around the world like a feather caught in a gentle breeze. And even though it feels a little crazy to walk away from, I sense that by sacrificing this comfortable life I’ve been living, I’ll gain one that’s much better suited for me.
"If I am an advocate for anything, it is to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river."
-Anthony Bourdain
